Artist Statement
For over 20 years, I have embraced the world of abstract acrylic painting, crafting large, evocative works that captivate and inspire. My journey as a professional artist has been marked by numerous accolades from art organizations, reflecting the recognition and appreciation of my unique style within the art community. As a dedicated teacher of abstract techniques in my studio and a proud 10 year member of the ArtLife gallery, I continuously seek to share and evolve my craft.
My method of choosing subject matter typically follows two distinct yet interconnected paths. Firstly, I draw inspiration from nature, translating the colors and forms of forests, beaches, mountains, and deserts into my abstract interpretations. My love for hiking and the outdoors deeply informs my work, allowing my impressions and feelings to take precedence over realistic representations. Secondly, I delve into moods and ideas, selecting them as a foundation for my abstract, non representational expressions. In these pieces, forms and colors take center stage, inviting viewers to explore their own emotions and interpretations.
What captivates me in any scene is its ability to provide endless enjoyment with each viewing. A composition that holds this quality is irresistibly compelling, calling me to translate its essence into my abstract language.
Nature and emotions are the wellsprings of my inspiration. I find profound beauty in trees, birds, and flowers, and seek to express my feelings towards nature through my art. Equally important are the emotions tied to my experiences with family and friends, which infuse my paintings with personal resonance and depth.
Through years of playful experimentation, I have developed techniques that set my work apart. Primarily, I paint a la prima, completing each piece in a single session using a wet-into-wet technique. This approach allows for seamless blending of colors and the creation of cellular structures unique to my art. I incorporate variances in paint liquidity to achieve this distinctive style. Utilizing large forms to guide the viewer's eye and smaller forms to refine the composition, I create dynamic and engaging works that are both visually striking and deeply expressive.
The joy I find within the artist community, particularly among friends at galleries and art fairs in California and Arizona, greatly enriches my artistic journey, My works, often sold and cherished by collectors, stand as a testament to my passion and dedication to the abstract form. Each painting stretched and framed with the sides as an integral part of the artwork presents a unique dialogue between the viewer, nature and emotions.
